Right parasternal view

  • Right parasternal long axis view: 4 chambers (figure 1), left ventricular outflow tract view (figure 2)
  • Ideally obtain in this view: long axis measurement of left atrial size (Figure 3) and color Doppler through the mitral valve, tricuspid valve and left ventricular outflow tract.

  • Left parasternal viewObtain the four-chamber view with the left atrium, left ventricle, right atrium, and right ventricle (Figure 7a and Video 7a). If all four chambers are not obtained in the same image two images can be obtained, one optimized for the left side, and one optimized for the right side. Obtain also the "five" chamber view with the left ventricular outflow tract, aortic valve and aorta if possible (Figure 8a).
  • Ideally obtain in this viewColor Doppler: transmitral (video 7b), transtricuspid and mitral regurgitation (Figure 7c video 7b) and tricuspid (Figure 7d) flow and left ventricular outflow tract, aortic valve and aorta (Figure and video 8a). Pulsed Doppler: transmitral flow (Figure 7e) and mitral regurgitation and transtricuspid flow and tricuspid regurgitation (Figure 7f). Continuous Doppler: aortic flow (Figure 8b).
